Puerto de la Cruz is a city and municipality located on the north coast of the island of Tenerife. It was formerly known by its English translation, “Port of the Cross”, although nowadays it is known in all languages by its Spanish name.
The most interesting attractions in the city are:
- Loro Parque is considered the most attractive tourist attraction in Tenerife. This botanical garden created on 170,000 square meters is home to many thousands of animals . In one part of the park surrounded by palm trees and tropical vegetation, you can count approx. 4,000 parrots. In addition you can find here over 300 species of animals, including dolphins, sea lions, penguins, jaguars, alligators, tigers, chimpanzees, bats, flamingos, giant tortoises, sharks. Several times a day in the park are organized shows involving sea lions , dolphins , parrots and orca whales.
- Botanical Garden in the El Botánico district. It was founded by King III in 1788 and is the second-oldest Botanical garden in Spain. It was created to to acclimatize tropical plants transported from other countries to Spain. On the area of 2.5 hectares, you can see more than 200 species of plants from different climatic zones.
- Also an interesting experience are the Martiánez Pools (Lago Martiánez). It’s a large swimming pool complex located on the shore of the ocean with a beach. It was completed and designed by the famous Canary architect César Manrique . On the area of 3 hectares there are pools arranged in the shape of lagoon and filled with sea water, surrounded by lush vegetation and volcanic rocks. It’s fun for both children and adults.
